Smithee, Most cogent and astute! I am (as ever) impressed!

Being the warped and sick person I am, I have arrived at a different interpretation.

Let's see who else weighs in and with what.

This should be fun!

... the earth as it was, say, in 1955, before global warming

This naturally would lead one to believe that it was Elvis' bursting upon the scene in 1956 that precipitated global warming. His initial hit, Heartbreak Hotel, apparently had a much deeper meaning than originally we had thought.

LOL! I always thought Glenn Campbell had to snort a few lines to make it all the way through his show. I don't know how the producers put together enough coherent tape to air a program.

What's your interpretation of the following lines? I'm sure you can find an appropriate environmental paradigm for them.

Fire on the mountain run, boys, run
The devil's in the house of the risin' sun
Chicken in the bread pan, pickin' out dough
Granny, will your dog bite? No, child, no
