Not a half assed War on Poverty Drugs war, but a full blown non-violent World War 2 War on Energy war (B4 we get a WW over energy). We need total focus and commitment to it, 24/7, like in WW2. From kids collecting tin to Victory Gardens and Rosie da Riveter to da troops. And it has to be worldwide. China and India are having problems, OPEC member Indonesia was having gas riots last year, blah blah. And we have to be careful we don't starve people by growing food for fuel. Takes money. Out of Iraq, yesterday. All that goes to energy. Put the entire DOE budget into renewables and conservation. Thea same thing, if there is a windfall tax on Big Oil. Maybe some of that money into coal gasification, whatever. Coal as coal ain't the answer. We've got global warming to consider here, too. We gotta get to CO2 neutral. Not that coal gas is. Research everything anybody can think of; nanotech is hot now in solar energy research. Spray on PV roofing, whatever. GM bacteria and plants for energy production. Gasp, what am I saying? More efficient bugs for ethanol production, fuel feedstocks what are GM'd to fix their own nitrogen. Don't know that I can live with that, but don't know if WE can't. More efficient engines and generators.Tide. Power storage. Lots of research. Quickest fix is conservation. We conserved like you wouldn't believe during Enron. If nothing else, it was our way of flipping off the folks who were gucking us. Marketplace plays a role, but... Mandate 55MPH speed limit. Major commitment to carpools. Maybe tax credits for scooters, bikes, motorcycles, and organ transplants. Do what it takes to get people on mass transit; subsidize to get price down, tax gas so much they would rather ride, I dunno. Get freight off trucks and on to rail. Much more than is happening. Fix the rail system; Kuntsler sez ours would embarrass a Bulgarian. Electrify the rails, too. Get fuel efficient and hybrids on the road, and gas burners like my 20 mpg faithful Shadowfax off. But they don't have a 4WD hybrid PU yet. Give them away if you have to. Lots of $ going to Iraq. Lots of tax money coming in from people doing all this work, eh? such a deal. Same thing with electricity; make homes more efficient with florescents and appliances, and give them away if you have to. Think of your own ideers; I probably have lots more somewhere in da brain. Supply side. Take all the MT factories and get them producing panels, windmills, a few water turbines, l00mpg hybrids (I wish), ethanol, BD. Give the PV to everybody, if that is what it takes. Start with every federal bldg. Cogeneration where possible. Take all the animal parts and old cooking grease and go major with BD. Legalize hemp for fuel. Get cane growing again in Hawaii. Oh, and help China nd India along the way, cuz they are trying to outconsume us. Crash programs. Million solar roofs in Cal in 10 years? Great start but way too small. Total US solar roofs in 10 years. That's a start.
