Peter, Back in the middle 1970s, when I was forced into shift work, I asked one of the docs for a prescription for something to help me sleep, which he readily gave me. I no longer remember what the prescription was for.

I lived alone and was afraid to take the pills. Occupational hazard, stemming from knowing what I knew? Perhaps. Anyway, that prescription remained in my medicine chest for months. I never did take any of the pills. I finally flushed them and never again asked for another prescription for sleeping pills. - Holly
