If people would elect me dictator, I would solve most of the problems and then resign and return the nation to a Democracy within several years.

I think that's along the lines of what Julius Caesar said - Elect me dictator and I'll save the Republic.

The only problem with dictatorships is the dictators are reluctant to turn power back over once they have tasted it.
