This time, Hitchens may have cost Cole his Yale job, which will put the poor Talibani student at a terrible disadvantage.

Actually it works the other way around. The more controversial, the more it appears that Cole is under attack from some elements in the right wing, the more likely he will get the position. Members of the history faculty who may be undecided about his qualifications would not wish anyone to think they've given in to unmerited political attack.

At the end of the day, the choice will be based on the quality of his scholarship and the degree to which it is influential within his field. If the judgment is clear, the Hitchens et al attacks won't matter. But if there are several faculty members who are undecided, the attacks are likely to lead them to favor the nomination.
