I don't think I can agree with your opinion that this is great writing.

Not all American conservatives worked hard to make Bush president esp. when he was competing for the nomination, more of them did work hard in the election but when the choice is Gore or Kerry that is understandable.

As for not criticizing Bush I've heard complaints from conservatives about his spending for a long time now.

I think the comparison to Stalin is overblown and inappropriate, even though I recognize it is limited to how some people supported or failed to condemn Stalin or Bush.

While I'm not a big fan of Bush I don't think calling him a tin-pot despotic dictator is "great writing" or even accurate.

Also it treats conservatives as some monolithic bloc or as if they where all the same, which is inaccurate and misleading.

I believe it was Jacob Heilbrunn who coined the term 'neo-Thom', yet another conservative subset.

the Old Right of Albert Jay Nock, John T. Flynn, Garett Garrett, H.L. Mencken

Albert Jay Nock - Libertarian

John Flynn - anti-FDR Progressive (he thought FDR would bring Fascism to America)

Garett Garrett - maybe the only true Old Rightist on the list. A bit of a nativist, he had a streak of the Know-Nothing in him. BTW, The Driver by Garret Garrett bears an odd resemblance to Atlas Shrugged, written 30 years later.

HL Mencken - major accomplishments were creating the American Mercury magazine and his book on the American language.

Quite an eclectic mix on this short list.
