If you have read history, I don't know how you could possibly believe that. Believing that the Hitlers of this world (and the mobs who follow such people) are anomalies, leaves you less on your guard against the Hitler that may arise in your own country. Hitler (the hypothetical Hitler) doesn't show up saying "Kill the Jews, or the hindus, or the homosexuals, or the ... (insert minority here)". He smiles at you, and encourages your optimism, and tells you what a marvelous people you are, and how great you could be, if only...

The more cynicism the better. Optimists have a lot to answer for, imo.

Blaise Pascal: "Men never do evil so cheerfully and so completely as when they do so from religious conviction."

I think you can subsitute any kind of conviction- it doesn't have to be religious. Obviously it was written by a cynic- but I'd put my life in Pascal's hands over any well meaning true believer any old day.
