The fact that we are still forfeiting lives and billions of dollars in that God forsaken desert speaks volumes about the quality of our leadership.

I think the Iraq war's direct drain on the national budget is in the 4 % range. That in itself isn't going to sink the country, and Cheney knows this, though when you add the indirect costs it's more worrisome.

The American pubic is getting what it has voted for. I have no idea what percentage of people voted for Bush because of abortion or gay marriages, but by any rational measure it had to be significant. By now some of these people, being hit where it hurts, in the pocketbook, are finally realizing that there are more pressing issues.

I am not a believer in voter fraud conspiracy theories, though fraud clearly does exist. In the 2000 election, Nader had a far larger effect than any genuine fraud and without him on the ballot, the election would not have been so close as for the outcome to be in the noise.

What beats me is why Bush and his folks are reluctant to use a international team to not only maintain peace in Iraq but also help in its rebuilding. I have no doubt that an Arab military force would do better than the US forces.

I am not sure if Bush-Cheney is reluctant to give up the war spoils/booty or that the other nations would not want to come in at this stage and instead prefer to let US handle it since Bush made a almost unilateral decision.
