Radio Shack announces local store closings
The Business Review (Albany) - 2:12 PM EDT Tuesday
by Michael DeMasi
The Business Review

Four Radio Shack locations in the Albany, N.Y., region are among 480 that the company is closing under previously announced plans by the electronics retailer to cut costs following a big drop in fourth quarter 2005 earnings.

Radio Shacks at The Crossings in Clifton Park, on Broadway in Menands, Hannaford Plaza in East Greenbush, and Altamont Avenue in Rotterdam, N.Y., are closing, store officials said Tuesday.

Store employees, who were given the option of moving to another store or accepting a severance package, said they expected the stores to close by June or July. Clearance sales are underway.

There are 34 Radio Shacks in the Albany region, said Wendy Dominguez, a spokeswoman for RadioShack Corp. (NYSE: RSH) in Fort Worth, Texas. All of the local stores are company-owned.

The company has more than 5,000 locations nationwide, including kiosks.

"Every day we are closing locations and finding new locations," Dominguez said.

Radio Shack announced in February it would close 400 to 700 stores nationally after fourth-quarter earnings dropped 62 percent compared to the same quarter in 2004. The final number of closures turned out to be 480, Dominguez said.

The corporate turnaround plan over the next 16 months relies on closing the low-performing stores, shutting down two distribution centers in South Carolina and Mississippi, changing store merchandise, expanding the kiosk business and opening new stores in better locations.
