Congrats to the Giants...Schmidt pitched very well tonight...Yet, the Cubs just can't seem to pull out of this terrible slump...Some of the fans are getting impatient...fyi...

Once again the Cubs start out the year with a lot of promise. Once again key injuries hurt them. Once again the Cubs can't score a run to save their lives and once again, a prolonged losing streak. Still a lot of talent, supposedly, but no results.

Watching the Cubs during the Dusty Baker reign has made one thing crystal clear to me: Baker is an excellent manager – when things are going well.

When the Priors and the Woods and the Lees are healthy; when the Kenny Loftons come over late in the year to reenergize the club for the stretch run – this is when managing is easy. But that is not where a manager or his coaching staff earns their salt.

Every club has injuries. The contenders figure out how to win despite them. The contenders have managers and coaching staffs who get that little something extra out of the rookies, who motivate their team and keep them up during the tough times, and who use adversity as inspiration.

Baker has shown no evidence whatsoever that he has any clue what to do when the going gets rough.

Baker has had 3-plus years to improve this ballclub and bring championship baseball to the North Side. Other than a fluky run of circumstances in 2003, he has not done that.

I say, no matter what happens in the next six months, the Cubs need a fresh start in the managerial and coaching staff positions in 2007...>>
