Re: ...I don't think Europeans know what multiculturalism is. When different cultures do rear their ugly heads, Europeans decide to split up.......see Macedonia, the former Yugoslavia, Moldavo and the former Czechoslovakia. And don't forget all the little blood feuds going on between the Basque and Spain; the Romas and central Europe and the northern Irish.

I've already answered that point:

Message 21812798;

You think you've answered my point but let me ask you. If the Poles......you know the plumber Poles that you see on billboards.........were to start moving into Belgium en masse illegally, you would be cool when they propose to change the national language to Polish? You wouldn't object? Is that right?

Re: For hundreds of years, we have been accepting many, many cultures into this country...

...and you've relentlessly dissolved them in your dominant Judeo-Protestant, English-speaking, anti-socialistic monoculture.

You wouldn't understand this concept since Europe has never gone through it, but yes, when you have millions from many different countries all at one time, there has to be some standardization. However, if it were as bad as you claim, why do we have so many cultural influences from the countries where these immigrants originate? Unlike most cities in Europe, you can find restaurants of all the major cultures in the average sized city in this country. The various cultures of the world have influenced the way we dress, the way our cities look, our strong emphasis on freedom of religion, on a very laissez-faire marketplace, and yes, even our language. Even our regional accents were dictated by the country from where those who settled the region emigrated.

In fact, Gustave, we have so many cultures floating around that it would make your head spin..........and the result is a multi ethnic hybrid that's called American. Apparently, you think this is cheating but in reality, its the result of years of mixing. We couldn't help it.

Re: ....in some public schools over a hundred languages are spoken.

Ditto for Europe. However, unlike Europe's immigrants (mostly in Germany, the Netherlands, and Scandinavian countries), the US's immigrants speak and write English fluently after a couple of years and it takes only one generation to see immigrants' children shed their parents' language and mores altogether.... Contrariwise, I just watched a TV reportage the other day on immigrants who were living in the Netherlands for over THIRTY years and still couldn't say anything in Dutch!!?!?(*)

We have that too............people who have lived here forever but can't speak English........why is it something to be proud of? Most people become bilingual. However, some people can't or won't grow, and learn a new language. Its their loss. Why would you not want to be able to speak the dominant language where you live at least when you are out in public? Think about how much you would miss if you only spoke Bulgarian while living in Belgium.

Re: We have Chinatowns, Japantowns, Little Italys; Germantowns, Japantowns, Greektowns, Korean towns, Little Indias.......the list goes on and on.

LOL... I know! But your problem is that Hispanic immigration has become so massive that soon it's YOU gringos who'll end up in "Little Honky Towns"... LOL...

Well, I am glad you got a laugh out of it.

Re: If we have a monoculture it is much like the monoculture in each European country.

And that's precisely my point: the EU is indeed made up of 25 different monocultures!

Yes, Europe is becoming more like the US.

Re: But what's different is that underneath we have a veritable smorgasboard of...

...ethnic minorities, all of them molded and polarized by the dominant US monoculture --the Flag, the Bible and the Apple Pie.

So you are telling me that the Walloons and Flemish have different flags, bibles and pastries that they prefer; that they pay their taxes to different gov'ts etc. Apparently, this is what you consider culture to be........I see it as being about much deeper stuff but then, what do I know......I'm only an American.

Re: Its amazing we don't kill each other over our differences.

LOL! Yeah, tell that to the victims of Timothy McVeigh, KKK nuts, and pro-life terrorist Eric Rudolph....

(*) Immigrants asked to speak Dutch in Netherlands

You go on and on about how accepting Europeans are of multiculturalism but then you post this article on the Dutch wanting only Dutch spoken in public. Is this all a game to you?
