"Why Al Qaeda Is Retreating From Iraq" versus "It's showdown time in Pakistan"...I found it amusing that on the same day you posted about AQ being on the run I was reading about their come back.

In Pakistan.. not Iraq. Last time I checked, they're two different countries located in two different regions of the globe.. ;0)

But it makes sense. Al Qai'da in Iraq has p*ssed off the Sunnis. When I left, we were seeing the beginning stages of Sunni tribal leaders engaged in fighting against Al Qai'da as "foreigners".

Now many of these Sunni tribal leaders are ALSO Salafists, but finally they didn't like being dictated to by "foreigners", nor the Talibanization of any area that Zarqawi managed to get a hold on.

And the Coalition leadership has FINALLY taken great stride to meet with Sunnis and to work to have their interests (and people) represented in the government.

And Zarqawi's attacks against the Jordanian hotel SUBSTANTIALLY DIMINISHED his credibility amongst Arabs in the region.

But Pakistan is another issue altogether. The MMA is definitely worried about the advances of Musharraf's government. We all must acknowledge that Pakistan is ALSO on the brink of civil war and has been since Musharraf came to power.

And it makes sense that Zawahiri and Bin Laden are going to try and concentrate attention back onto Afghanistan, now that their efforts in Iraq have failed to achieve traction.
