Another Vani case in Pak: Mother daughter gang-raped
New India Press ^

LAHORE: In another gruesome case of Vani in Pakistan, a mother-daughter duo was gang-raped in Bhawalpur district of Punjab province on the night intervening Wednesday and Thursday.

The incident occurred at village Kasra Majal, about 20km from Bahawalpur, reported The News.

As many as 14 culprits led by one Mustafa committed the crime on the two women, identified as Nazir Bibi and her daughter Lal Bibi. Both, the assaulters and the victims belonged to the same village.

According to the paper, the victims’ family told media persons that they were subjected to this inhuman treatment because of alleged illicit relations of Nazir Bibi’s son Dilshad with Kulsoom, the daughter of Mustafa.

Nazi Bibi said that she and her family had no confidence in the police, as neither Abbas Nagar police nor the ASP Sadar were ready to listen to them. She claimed that the rapists were “very influential”.

In recent months, there has been a strong resentment against the Vani custom prevailing in Pakistan. Under the age-old custom, if any male member of a family develops intimate or sex relations with another family, then the local panchayat punishes the first family and orders that one female member of that family would be given to the second family as ‘Vani’.

The order of the local panchayat is to be strictly followed, and it does not have a bearing to any court of law.
