As Krugman pointed out in a recent editorial on the Veteran's health care administration, most of these problems with HMO gouging, inflated ice packs, etc, would simply not exist if an integrated public health care were provided by the government. Where, rather than profit above all else, the long term health of the citizens of this country, beyond the empty campaign promises of this or that 4 years of a given presidential administration, were the primary goal.

the veterans health system bargains hard with medical suppliers, and pays far less for drugs than most private insurers.

The VHA demonstrates that it is not an impossible dream but the deeply vested interests at work in the country make it seem so.

My hospital is losing money. For whatever reason. And I know lots of them (reasons). But that's another story.
