I think he probably didn't even realize he did it. I'd like to see him back, since he really does make an effort to be fair- and he's taken a lot of abuse from liberals on other boards without giving back what he's getting. I think when you take a lot of abuse elsewhere, it can be hard to recognize a very low level slur (like the one in his post).

I would be happy to see him back.

But, as always, the moderator has the final say when they create and manage a board.

I have seen several of his posts on other boards because he often tangles with a guy I have peoplemarked. Let me make two related points:

1. I don't think banning someone here infringes on their freedom much. They have usually spent years on SI posting on other boards, where they are still free to post. Thousands of other boards out there.

2. I am not going to unban people whose main purpose in posting is to be confrontational and shove their POV down someone else's throat. The thread exists for people to share different POVs amicably. Pretty much everyone I have banned has crossed the line between civility and bashing.

When I skim the posts of people on the ban list - which I do when I am bored with work sometimes - I see the same pattern of bashing and crashing that got them banned here in the first place.

With any luck, the restrictive nature of the thread will drive all the partisans away. That was the whole point in the first place.
