Wait a minute...situation?

Main Entry: sit·u·a·tion
Pronunciation: "sich-&-'wA-sh&n
Function: noun
1 : the way in which something is placed in relation to its surroundings
2 : the total set of physical, social, and psychocultural factors that act upon an individual in orienting and conditioning his or her behavior
3 : relative position or combination of circumstances at a particular moment

"Some people seem to believe that incident is a good word for describing a situation where people are leaping from a skyscraper to avoid the heat and flame of jet fuel. I don't. "

And don't forget- in the letter we were discussing, it was "horrendous incident". Is that better? Does the adjective make any difference now that you've thought about it?

So in your post you express that you don't like incident, but you like situation (one must assume you like it, since you used it). I think incident has more gravitas than situation, but heck, we're all entitled to our own nits.

Would you like incident better if Mr. Bush used it? Or would he be violating propriety by using it? Was it wrong for the ambassador's wife to refer to Hiroshima as an incident? After all, 230 thousand people died in that. What words would we be able to use, aside from "situtaion"? Do you have a list?

Some of us are better nit pickers than others

Let's just say that you may be just a piker nitpicker in the
larger scheme of things around here...lol.

Try saying that fast after you've had an alcoholic beverage or
two.<g>

I'm not going to tread into the linguistic debate anymore today!
