The problem is that the enthusiast market knows about Conroe performance, even though it won't be here for another couple months. Virtually all the gamer kiddies are waiting for Conroe at this point, rather than planning to move to AM2, because they've seen sample benches for each. AMD needs to give them a reason to go with the AM2 platform, and if all they have is a future upgrade, they need to start selling that now.

tgp, on Osborning

I agree with you mostly. What AMD is going to do, appears to be to announce that the AM2 socket will be ready to accept quad-core, once available. So we'll get a full AM2 roll-out in two weeks (so soon :) ), then in early June, they'll announce quad-core compatibility, assuring any doubters that AM2 is the way to go -- why wait for Conroe when a new AMD2 platform can be upgraded to quad-core in 2007.

I really like that strategy. It takes away from the Conroe "wait until we deliver" pitch. Sure, Conroe might deliver performance benefits for six months to a year, but an AM2 buyer will be reassured that his investment is protected by the quad-core futures. So no need to wait; buy that AM2 system now.

AMD has managed this transition extremely well, IMHO.
