You start with caps, as MY NAME IS RATTY

Then you add these:

b (for bold)
i (for italics)
u (for underline)

and contain the selected attribute above within these
characters < >

That turns ON the desired attribute FROM THAT POINT.

So you need to turn OFF the caps FROM THAT POINTand you do the
same containing of the characters with < >

except that to turn OFF the attribute you show it with a /
preceding the attribute itself

Now you know why I am not a tech writer.
