"They aren't making them, so the car companies probably believe its not economical."

It is more complicated than that. Embedded deep in Detroit's belief system is that the smaller the car, the cheaper it is. Since fuel efficient cars are smaller, they need to carry a smaller price tag and hence, less profit. So they have had a laser-like focus on things like SUVs and have never even tested to see if that assumption is correct. So they got blind-sided with the rise in gas prices.

re: It's conjecture, but I'd say 9/11 would have happened even if the US were oil independent. The main cause of 9/11 is US support for Israel. The Islamists don't hate the US because we consume oil; rather, they hate us for supporting a Jewish homeland smack in the middle of a traditionally Muslim region.

That's not what bin Laden was saying around that time. His big beef was US troop stationed on Muslim land, especially Saudi Arabia. It was later that he took up the Israel/Palestine thing as a major issue.

If we were oil independent, we would have pretty much ignored the Middle East; other than oil it's a freaking desert, who cares? And if we were oil independent, who knows how steadfast our support of Israel would have been. Right now Israel is strategic; take away oil and it's just another special interest.

and the car dealers ship the ~8 year old cars off to South East Asia.

Than you still have just as many old cars, its just that the older cars are somewhere else.
