Carter did the right thing on energy and the environment, and he wasn't a left-winger. But he was a man of true faith (as opposed to hypocritical rightwing faith), compassion and moral strength. As they say, Jesus would vote liberal. In fact he was even sort of a communist, so maybe a leftward swing will be accepted by the mainstream voters. But no more left than Kerry or Gore.
