Smithee, I was speaking hypothetically. None of this involves me. At least, not at present.

Which brings me to a more salient point: One of the problems I have seen over the years is that many to most do not give a rat's patootie unless their ox is gored. I try to look beyond my ox. Always have. - Holly

This littled debate points to the difficulty the govt has in balancing free speech/privacy etc. with national security. Neither side in this debate should forget that the other side has a valid argument. You almost need some sort of bipartisan or at least collegial setup to judge what is allowed and what is not. If this is as you say it is, no problem. I think LL is worried that it might go a bit further. This is something for reasonable folks to compromise on.

What makes you think they are tracking your interactions?

As I understand the program, they are searching (with a computer program) for calling patterns.

I see no distinction. The 2 are the same.

And I'll ask again: where do they get the right to do it in the first place?

United States Constition

Amendment X - Powers of the States and People.
The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

As long as you do not receive lots of phone calls from places like the tribal land region of Pakistan, I think you don't have much to worry about.

Do you?

What do you think?
If I ever got a call from OBL or one of his boys, I'd get them to call back the next day and have the FBI ready to trace that call.

I do believe it is prudent to exercise caution in government surveillance, but considering the posts of a few SIers year in and year out, it becomes harder to make the case for the government being overly aggressive.
