If you consider that IBM and Intel are competitors and "partners" at the same time, the partner thing has lessened greatly since the sale of the PC division.

Yeah, that was one of the things Charlie hit on as to why IBM is moving to AMD. It seems like the "INTC partner" group has lost a lot of its' clout and the "pro AMD" group is now in the ascendency. Getting in bed with AMD helps IBM with a couple of problems. It gives IBM a product line that is much in demand, and at the same time weakens INTC by depriving it of sales. Seems like a "well duh" situation, but I've always been amazed at how long it takes IBM to recognize the obvious.
