I take it you're not shopping at a Walmart, then (or even an upmarket equivalent). Having seen the package sizes there, I suspect you'd have to have a car, at least unless your family is part-elephant.

Another bonus of urban design not reliant on cars, of course, is that out-of-town hypermarkets lose their free advantages of being 'all under one roof' and limitless parking. So it advantages the high street, and encourages useful stores rather than just endless fashion chains, which encourages the HS as a destination, which brings in other speciality shops, plus bars and restaurants, and makes for a much more enjoyable environment altogether. And the goods may cost a little more but of course you save the vehicle/petrol costs...
