That can mean a number of things. 1 - Neither the federal government nor the state government recognizes a polygamous relationship as a valid marriage. I don't have a problem with this lack of recognition. 2 - The government says it is illegal to take out a 2nd marriage licence. In other words it is illegal to use the process laid out under state law for marriage, with more than one marriage partner. This is largely the same as #1 looked at from a different direction, but it isn't exactly the same. 3 - The government makes it illegal for you to say you are married to more than one person, in other words it says its is illegal for you to say you are married to person X and also that you are married to person Y. Note fraud and deception on this issue are covered separately under #4. Personally I don't see why its a matter of the governments concern unless you are doing so to commit fraud. 4 - The government makes it illegal for you to defraud people through multiple marriages, either with real marriage licenses, forged licenses, or somehow convincing someone a marriage is legal without the licence. I don't have a problem with making fraud illegal. If you have two women, each of whom thinks they are legally married to you and that they are the only person married to you than you are committing fraud against them (or perhaps against only one of them). If you are legally married to only one than its a fraud against the person you are not legally married to. If your married to neither its a fraud against both. If you actually have a properly approved marriage licence for both than you committed a fraud against or at least made false statements to the government. 5 - The government makes it illegal for you to live with and have sex with multiple different partners. Well not only do I think this should not be illegal, it isn't illegal. Well some places have restrictions on how many unrelated people you can live with, but not all places do, not all limits are very low or very well enforced, and in any case the limits are not related to the idea of outlawing polygamy, and if someone violates them they are not prosecuted for polygamy. Which of these do you think are currently illegal? Which do you think fall in to a legal gray area? Which do you think should be illegal? Why? Tim
