"But this is impossible. If the Conroe is this good, why would they sell it for $239?"

I dunno, everyone is extrapolating from a handful of selected benchmarks. Given that it isn't likely that Intel selected benchmarks where NGA does poorly against K8 and the fact that NGA is very likely to perform extremely well on workloads where there is a predictable pattern to data fetches and may not do very well at all on things where there aren't, then this extrapolation seems error prone.

You would think the fact that Intel keeps other benchmarks under NDA would raise some suspicions...

Looks like they did it on a yield-price curve where 3.33 ? EE is ~1K. Also they have brought P-D prices crashing right down to this level so the Conroe will fit in the same price points now. I think the Conroe pricing is being well done by Intel, they are cheap and attractive enough to possible sell all they make and make their asp start heading North again back to $150 and beyond while at the same time squeezing AMD's down again. It's looking like Northwood-XP all over again and those were bad times for AMD. They have more breadth to their line now with Opterons and such but the way out of this maybe to compact the majority of their line to $100-200 and making lots of them with their increased capacity. They can still keep their profits heading North while P-D forms the majority of Intel's output. Keeping to their current price structure is not a serious option I believe when Conroe arrives in volume.

The only other possibility is that Intel has a secret megafab ready to flood the market, which seems mighty unlikely.

Actually Intel has 3, and they are no secret. Intel will sell it at that price because they can do so and maintain margins.

Why is attempting to crush a competitor nonsensical?
