McCain Courts the Religious Right
“Six years after labeling the Rev. Jerry Falwell one of the political ‘agents of intolerance,’ Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) delivered the commencement address Saturday at Falwell's Liberty University,” reports the Washington Post.

Hotline On Call: "Friendship and forgiveness highlighted" McCain's address. "It was a speech filled with tales of McCain's own graduation, the events in Iraq and the situation in Darfur. But it was the ending which was most poignant, and a subtle reminder of why McCain was at this Jerry Falwell-established university. He spoke of how people need to be 'respectful of the goodness in each other.' McCain: 'I have not always heeded this injunction myself, and I regret it very much.'"

Meanwhile, Newsweek notes that “some conservatives may be appeased by the sight of McCain at an evangelical institution. But it's going to take more than a patriotic speech to convert many of McCain's enemies. Conservative activists are drawing up litmus tests for McCain, as they hope to extract concessions on the road to the primaries.”
