I see no problem whatsoever when theorizing on "Man" using relevant metaphor ....if all the world is a stage as well as then we certainly are players upon that stage . That we were "shaped & molded" by envirionment an idea that shouldn;t offend anyone . (The Hawaiian worshiped the shark , we have sharks today swimming about and call them "lawers" ! The eskimo worhipped the Bear , we have those too!)

To say that the main bulk of humanity has historically progressed as it has discovered wider capacity for metaphor and deepening analogy in scope regards to the variety of the diet of experience , is a truism for me . Einstein did no less with his "mind experiments" analogies to discover what was already always there of "relativity". But one has to have poetry and science & philosphy in the first place and the freedom to collect what metaphors and analogies that then do come to bear fruit in the mind , and have the freedom to assemble them into new revolutionary forms . Ah the prose of it all !

Darwin discovered no less with the metaphor/analogy in origin of the species to discover that once the world is looked at with eyes linked to geological time frame, one begins to readily grasp the idea/analogy of the "Great Branching Tree" of connecting all life . Nothing could be more akin to one of the most universal symbols shared by all religious creation myths too , that idea of an "Eden" within which rivers flow and at the center is a "Great Tree" . Our own nervous complex is setup like rivers creeks and streams that flow up and out from extremities and spinal column to culminate in that delta center of our own brain complex , some 60,000 miles of "Tree like" intertwined nervous complex.

Here i would defend the metaphor and analogy itself , which adds truths especilly when linked with poetry and art and science and philosophy , with which makes possible for other conceptualization than those eldest simplistic "Father Mother" analogies for God and Creators , but those are just fine too. Its quite usefull to have an interaction of the entire scope of thought and observations from every corner of that which makes the total scope of the height , width , breadth and length of things involving man , man's condition , and the condition of reality from Skinner's envirionmental behavioralism to Rand's rational egoism .

Neither really negates the other , actually complimentary in a way just different parts of the tree ....to say that we ourselves are biological machines and for a great part of the time operate on a Pavlovian impulse reflex from direct or discrete stimuli in the immediate environment which includes that from within the body/mind complex too , i would accept as mainly true . To see man as an advanced complex of self realizing potential , with the will to control and transcend such organic mechanistic animal response, and direct himself thru some new structures of passion or driven purpose against the tide of belief is also an acceptable variant .

Nice to have a link for that ...
