Part of what is "correct" depends on what you want the result to be. The "correct" way of looking at things if you want a more restrictive police type society, will not be the "correct" way of looking at things if you are less worried about external dangers and more worried about the danger from your own government.

While all sources slant news, based on world view, I think much of the slant is due at bottom to very real differences in the way we want to live.

There is no way to resolve the differences between the ways people choose to live. There will always be tension between those who want a less restrictive society, even though it comes with certain risks due to its lack of restrictiveness, and those who want a more restrictive society, and are willing to put up with the risks that come with a more restrictive society. There are different rewards and risks with each type of society- I don't think either is probably less risky at the extremes, and which path you choose is probably governed by personality.
