Oh... well, I certainly agree with you on that point (but I don't think it's really a national 'fault' in our character --- I think it is very much to our credit as a people, and has also benefited us much over the years.)

Remember the Cold War?

It was fundamentally a global 'contest of IDEAS'.

The ideas of personal freedom, rule of law, and free markets won out in that contest because they were BETTER then the ideas put forward by the other side.

We are in a similar global contest now. (Yes, there are military dimensions, just as there were during the contest with the Soviets and Maoists... and the military contest cannot be neglected --- but the ultimate victory will only be won in the CONTEST OF IDEAS, between free 'Western-style' societies, and religiously fundamentalist THEOCRATIC-style repressive Authoritarian regimes.)
