Jim S, Actually, since grocers have begun scanning and listing the item and price, plus handing out those cute little cards to allow substantial discounts on your purchases. it is perfectly capable of keeping a record of your buying habits.

Say, you buy alcohol, cigarettes, other "unhealthful" products. Does anyone really think your health/life/disability insurance carriers are not able to get their crafty mitts on this info and use it against them?

FWIW, I have a couple of those cute little discount cards and use them regularly and avidly. However, I did not give the stores my correct name or address or any other pertinent information. Not even close. - Holly

I had to chuckle at you mentioning my grocery store ID card. I've had one since the day they offered it. I quickly recognized what they were doing with it and was steamed. I'm still steamed, but continue to use it. Jokes on me.

But, I agree, we are far too closely watched to suit me. It's the world we live in dictating this, I suppose. I don't like it and it's overdone. But, not doing any of it terrifies me.

Enough of this, I'm gonna watch a baseball game. Later....

And, to repeat, I'm not so much concerned about the Bush administration misusing these capabilities as I am in some future administration having the ability to do so.

Good point.

I'd be quite frightened to think that Hillary Clinton administration would have access to that information.

I can't think of a single governmental power that hasn't been misused or abused at some time or another.
The Feds PROMISED SSNs would never be used as national ID numbers. Guess what is used as an ID number by the Feds?

The Feds PROMISED that its federal highway funds would not be used to force states to make their laws conform to what the Feds want to get those funds. Guess what the Feds did during the '73 energy crises?

The Feds PROMISED Federal Aid To Education funds would not be used to set state educational standards. Guess what's happening now?

Somebody REALLY wonders why we don't trust the Feds?
