Fear, whether it's 911 or declining competitiveness or the demise of easy-to-reach oil, drives people into rightwing craziness IMO. That would include the nutty Neocons, the thieving GOP, the evangelical armageddonist freakshow, the Minutemen, urban assault vehicles, etc. Who knew the USA was such a scared-out-of-its-wits nation? Instead of making the USA braver and calmer, the Rovian scheme was to make it even more frightened. Now it's reaching that particular foreign policy climax with the threat of nuclear weapons. This whole thing is completely out of control.
