But consumers don't buy CPUs based on die area. AMD's Thoroughbred was a painful example of how cheaper dies will not stop the red ink if demand isn't there.

This is you guessing. It is up to AMD to decide ultimately early September or so which percentage of a December launch (presuming HKEPC is right) should be Turion X2.

A 2007 launch is what the roadmaps at HKEPC and PC Watch are showing. AMD is on the record saying 65-nm launch would begin with Athlon 64. There was no mention of a simultaneous launch of 65-nm Turion X2. While that could change in the future, AMD is signalling now that Turion X2 won't launch until Q1 2007 at the earliest.

WOW! That's gotta run chills up and down the spines of INTC management now that AMD will be able to guarantee supply to OEM's...and at very reasonable pricing, all of course, assuming reasonable yields.

(By the way, last I heard was that AMD was very pleased with 65nm on the yield front. Something to the effect that 65nm yields were already approaching 90nm yields, which by most accounts are pretty darn good.)

I think one should stick to the ~2 times more candidates per wafer compared to FAB36 90nm X2s figure. :)
