I don't know what the answer is, but we can't afford to keep spending the way we have been (unless we are willing to see taxes raises to pay for the spending).

As you know, John, my own prescription is to reverse all of the Bush tax cuts, try to find other ways in which the last ten or fifteen years of fiscal policy has been a reverse robin hood in which money has been redistributed upward, tweak social security with serious policy aims rather than simply playing politics, and move to health care (medicare) for all (which many argue will lower overall health care costs).

But the politics of the moment won't permit this kind of attention to the public good. Too much emphasis on private good; too much playing politics
