The main thing that's driven the zinc shortage is that China has gone from being a major exporter to a major importer of the metal during the last 2 years. Therefore, at the margin, the supply side of the equation has changed dramatically. And on the demand side, as we know, consumption has increased throughout the world during that period -- not just in China/India. Simple supply-demand stuff really, but reaching a critical point with the stocks so low and no increase in mine production in sight. JMHO.

By far the main use of zinc is for galvanising steel to protect it from corrosion. This is primarily steel in construction, particularly roofing. Galvanised steel roofing is the most common type here in NZ. I think the Chinese are starting to use it for this.
