Watching the demonstrators on television carrying the Mexican flag and shouting about Mexican pride, we wonder, "If Mexico is so wonderful then why did yon come to the United States?" As an American citizen, I know that no nation can remain sovereign without controlling its borders. A double wall should be built and the border patrol should patrol between the wall and around the perimeter of the wall. The military also should be at the border to help stem the flow of illegals. I agree with Tom Tancredo when he denounces the "cult of multiculturalism" and says, "The U.S. is committing cultural suicide by allowing its national identify to be eroded." The United States has English as its official language; it does not make sense to provide bilingual documents and services for a certain ethnic group. This only hampers them in learning to speak English. Those who march for citizenship, the right to live and work here should learn the English language as did other immigrant groups. There should never be a guest worker program (amnesty) for people who break the law. It only causes more illegals to cross the border. Companies who hire illegals should be heavily fined and the company leaders sent to jail. People who need seasonal workers, gardeners, housekeepers, construction workers, hire the homeless, teenagers or use the people who are in jail for nonviolent crimes. Make sure they make a living wage. Coming to the United States is a privilege, not a right as some would want you to believe. If citizenship is truly a goal, then learn English, sing the National Anthem in English, not in Spanish. Learn about American history (not the revisionist history) and the American government. Above all, be willing to assimilate and adopt the American culture and pledge allegiance to the United States.chieftain.com
