The whole thing is ghastly to me. I may be over reacting as that is the way I feel today but I believe that I see the implications of this illegal invasion into the privacy of so many individuals far reaching.. And on the Right Wing Boards they are applauding the move.

Those aren't thoughtful, analytical threads; just, I think Dale called them "cheerleading threads." About right. It's our team against their team.

But there are thoughtful folk on the right, largely the libertarian strain, best exemplified to me by Bill Safire. I don't think I shared an iota of his political convictions but was always impressed when he got on his anti lie detector rant. Good stuff.

The technology, best I understand it, begged for what the Bush folk did. Our only protection was the thin veneer provided by adhering to a set of statutes, some of them passed in the 70s.

The trouble I see is that once done, it can be done again. It takes a political culture revulsion of large scale magnitude to keep the next administration from doing something much the same.

It's something beyond sad as far as I'm concerned.
