Problem's been that the DEMs pretty much always put a telltale fix into the primaries. The media derives its clues from party leaders who've always pushed the subtle hint buttons. How do you think Dukakis got there? Or Gore or Kerry? Carter and Clinton too! I don't believe any true progressive candidate, except McGovern, ever got the nomination--at least since I've been alive. And of course, we saw what Nixon's Swiftboat equivalenters (new word, maybe--lol?) did to McGovern. And have folks noticed how the Hillary fix seems now at play? Kennedy was different, but look what happened to him! Whether Robert Kennedy, Fred Harris, Jerry Brown, Jesse Jackson or Howard Dean the DEMs almost always seem to fry the progressive voices. GOPwingers are a worse breed, however. Much, much worse. We're seeing this today. And there's no need to elaborate here, especially on this thread. Overall, I think if the DEMs can do well in the '06 elections (no third party's gonna help here) and can get past 'the fix' of both the media and the primaries, and can actually land a candidate in the White House who believes in people before profits, sound appointments and good governance there may be some hope. Granted, it's a longshot. If Republicans win the White House in '08 then it's time for a brand new party. But, by then, it might be too late. For all we know, it might be too late already. If the Dems capture both Congress in '06 and the White House in '08 then I think we, as a nation, have to hope they'll succeed. If they fail in leadership under conditions where they can lead--well then, again, it's time for that new party. I'd call it UPIC: United Party of Independent Citizens!
