:-)

I think you can look at polls to find the general center. I realize that may be more threatening to some folks than to others- but if a majority of the people believe something, that's probably the closest you can get to the idea of a centrist ideology embraced by citizens of the US. You could also define centrist as a way of looking at issues- as a way of trying to even handedly approach things- and that is NOT (imo) going to be embraced by a majority of the population.

Of course I'm a lefty, so what do I know? I think I need to put "I'm a lefty" in all my posts- so people can be assured I'm well aware of my own political leanings. Saying it ever 40th post (or so) doesn't seem to be enough.

I haven't seen anyone define the center here, or challenge my basic definitions of what the opinion polls say about swing voters' current positions.

Really? Guess I missed all those swing voter polls.

Several posters have tried to define 'your center' as left of the real center. I would agree. Your argument, if I correctly understand it, is that 'the polls' tell us the center has actually moved left. No wonder some of your posters are confused.

If the center has actually moved left, why did so many voters disagree with the administration on: Its stand on Harriet Meiers? Its stand on Dubai? Its stand on the borders? Aren't those right leaning issues? Not withstanding what some polls say.

I supported Dubai (right of center) opposed Meiers (left of center) and opposed policy on the borders (right of center).
I don't what that makes me. Maybe just stuck on stupid. <g>

I think of "center" as consensus. Sometimes the center is quiet about certain issues because things are going along fine.

Abortion, for example, has a center -- abortion should be legal, but elective abortions should be done early on.

The left position is to allow late term elective abortions.

The right position is to make abortion illegal.

Most people are in the center on this one.
