It is in fact one way for people to earn their citizenship and there's nothing wrong with it, except it's not fast enough. I've know plenty of Pacific Islanders and a couple of brits that were serving but not citizens, you have no idea of the hoops they had to jump through to join.

You'd better check with your uncle again about the 17,000 illegals.
