I had a friend in the Navy who was Dan Quayle's national security aide for a while; insisted Quayle was a smart guy, and my friend was not a BSer by any means. Go figure.

I met Al Gore once. He was quite animated and not at all the tree stump he seems to be. Of course, he was visiting EPA at the time so his animation might have been an exception.

I'm told by friends, one who did polling for Gore, that your experience was typical. In person, he's loose and charming. But hand him a speech and put him in front of a crowd and he goes wooden and condescending.

Did you see Gore on SNL this past weekend?

He was loose and his verbal delivery was much freer than I've ever heard before.

That Gore would have won.

I hope he runs in '08...I could vote for him quicker than any other potential candidate on the horizon, plus it would set his "loss" in '00 to rights.
