Geoff and Jim S, Absolutely! But it goes back even further

I remember a pleasant evening at a party in the spring of 1964 when my staid and proper mother used the word "gay" in reference to a city renowned for its romance and gaiety. Much tittering erupted. Mother was at a loss to comprehend why there was so much embarrassed laughter at what she had said. When it was explained to her how her use of the word "gay" had been interpreted, she was indignant and incensed at this redefinition and ultimate hijacking of a commonly used, descriptive and good English word.

Me? I'm with Mother. - Holly

I have a niece and a cousin with the name Gay, and both are quite happy with it.
