vp's chosen mostly as vote adding to the overall vote. like kennedy in new england and then johnson from texas... pull vote from various sections of the country.

kerry,, new england,, edwards south.

Bush, running more on dad's name and i expect strong support from big shots who control republican party.. Cheney was a complete surprise.. but the factor there appeared to be experience, sharing more responsibility. i think he also announced early on sec of state and sec of defense. This helped him get more votes. He was going for a strong experienced team and this was supposed to show his lack of experience in international politics would not be a problem. remember in Boston the question of five top leaders of various countries, Bush never heard of the countries never mind the leaders.

So i think vp is a job to help top man get votes , money, hold party together. usually after that vp was put out to pasture, attend non important publicity events.

Look at mccain , boy is he a changed man , oh, he knows if he raises his hand and asks more questions he will win next position. gg But it is all fake,, for show, mccain hasn't changed. However if they want to win they have to give the appearance , republican leaders that mccain is now accepted back in the party. all is forgiven. don't you just love politics.
