The Great Depression was caused by Wall Street speculation, mainly by rich investors driving the market up and up, using the market as a huge Ponzi game, until the whole thing collapsed. Like the dot-com boom/bust times ten. Then there was a run on the banks and they collapsed. The government was only involved because it didn't regulate the markets then. Which proves why we need a strong SEC. We saw this type of abuse during the A+L debacle and the ongoing energy gouging as well. When the government lets exploiters keep stealing and stealing, the country's economy becomes at risk. The S+L debacle cost 300 billion. The current energy gouging maybe twice as much.
