You could draw a continuum that reaches from Fascist dictator to Socialist Republic. The middle road is America. We have the authority of our constitution that could be applied in an oppressive manner if not for the rights and liberties of citizens which are imbedded, and the checks and balances of government. We have built social programs to accommodate the needs of those who are less successful in competitive capitalism and we have built a strong and competitive economic system. It may be your fear that when power shifts and conservatives acquire control of decision making in government, we will become a fascist state. The counter fear is that if there is a power imbalance and the liberals acquire control of decision making in government, we would be driven so far left that we become a socialistic state. Neither fear is realistic, at least in the foreseeable future. It is ridiculous to make claims that either condition exists currently or that either is likely to manifest in the near future, or that any of our leaders have successfully committed a political coup in that regard. We've got plenty of real problems that we could be focusing on... how about it?
