OK, so let's grant 16% of the folks who think the country is off track are disgruntled conservatives. Take today's Post poll with a 69% number:

The survey suggests that pessimism about the direction of the country -- 69 percent said the nation is now off track -- and disaffection with Republicans have dramatically improved Democrats' chances to make gains in November.

So 53% of the non-conservatives are pissed off. Your CNN link doesn't work but let's say 35% of the country is liberal and 95% of them dislike Bush. That's 33% liberal plus 16% conservative, leaving 20-25% not satisfied out of the remaining 31% (other polls run up to 75% not satisfied). If you take a lower liberal number like 25%, then 24% of the disgruntled are liberals and 29% of the 41% moderates aren't happy.

That is most of the center, according to your numbers. They don't want a dogmatic conservative or liberal answer, they made that clear.

LOL, why can't people on the right or the left acknowledge that despite many years of partisan, ideological rule, NO ONE on the edges has built a lasting majority?

If you can find a durable majority somewhere on those extremes, please let me know. I don't see it. This idea that the right is really always right and is just one more talk show away from a big lasting majority is stale. Just like the progressive crusaders who couldn't get a centrist vote if their lives depended on it.

Of the conservatives who want a new direction, how many do you suppose want a new direction left, and how many want a new direction right? ;^)

For that matter, of liberals who want a new direction, how many do you suppose want a new direction right, and how many want a new direction left?

In other words, who's really pulling for the center?
