I hope you'll let us know how it goes. I'm sure there are other people here who could use any remedies you come across as you work with your daughter.

This is interesting- I especially found the part about Chromium interesting. We use a bread flavored with molasses (and honey).

Vegetarian, low fat diet & Acne

It is the male hormone, testosterone, which stimulates the production of the sebaceous glands in times of stress. This is why people often develop acne when under stress. Meat (including poultry) contains hormones and hormone-like substances which can affect the hormonal balance in the body. Beauticians have reported that women who regularly eat meat are more likely to suffer from acne and hirsuitism which they put down to the steroids and hormone levels in the meat.

Essential Fatty Acids & Acne

Research published in the Journal of American Academy of Dermatology has shown that Essential Fatty Acids (EFA) can help hormonal imbalances that lead to acne. In fact, people with hormonal related acne have been shown to have deficiencies of EFA's . It is therefore well worth ensuring that the diet contains plenty of the EFA's in cases of PCO's.

Foods rich in EFA's include sunflower, soybean, corn or safflower oils, sunflower seeds and linseeds (otherwise known as flax seeds).

Vitamin A & Acne

Vitamin A is necessary for the maintenance of healthy skin and hormonal balance. Research has confirmed that people with severe acne typically have low levels of vitamin A in their blood. There are several reports of adolescent women with imbalanced hormonal function and consequent acne who were 'cured' of acne within a few weeks after taking vitamin A supplements. In one case, even the scars left from the acne disappeared. After two weeks of vitamin A supplementation, the patient noted no new eruptions for the first time in five years. The regime was so effective that there was no need for conventional medical treatment for the removal of scars. Another patient also reported that her face cleared up within one month of taking vitamin A, vitamin E and brewers yeast tablets. Good natural sources of vitamin A include carrots, green leafy vegetables (eg. broccoli, kale, spinach), yellow/orange fruits (e.g. peaches, apricots, mangoes).

IMPORTANT NOTICE: vitamin A supplements should only be taken under professional advice because there is evidence that adverse effects (including birth defects) may be caused by doses of 25,000iu or higher.

Zinc & Acne

Zinc is known to help acne sufferers. Whilst the mechanism by which it works is still not fully understood, a lack of zinc has been shown to increase the production of male hormones. There have been several reports of patients who were 'cured' of longstanding acne (one for over 12 years) which were 'cured' with a low fat diet coupled with zinc gluconate supplements. In a controlled study, zinc was shown to have "dramatic improvement" in approximately 60% of acne sufferers. (8) Zinc is found naturally in generous amounts in brewers yeast, whole grains, brazil nuts and pumpkin seeds.

Vitamin B6 & Acne

Dr B Leonard Snider of Pennsylvania reported that vitamin B6 is particularly helpful in cases of acne. In one study involving adolescent girls who had menstruation difficulties, he noted reduced symptoms of acne by 50 - 75%.

Chromium & Acne

There are reports that suggest that up to 90% of the population may be deficient in chromium. Chromium is related to blood sugar - the more sugars we eat, the more chromium we need. Hence the common deficiency; most people eat excess sugar foods. Researchers have found that people with unstable blood sugar levels have a high incidence of severe acne and that when these patients are given 400 micrograms of chromium in the form of yeast, their skin rapidly improved Chromium is found in brewers yeast and molasses.

Selenium & Acne

Selenium is a trace element that has received a lot of attention in the health press in recent years, primarily due to its clear connection in the prevention of cancer. However, research has shown that selenium coupled with vitamins A & E can within 12 weeks reduce the severity of persistent acne and help alleviate resultant scarring.

This is the kind of thing I had read (though I didn't know you needed to avoid tea!):

Diet and Supplement Suggestions
There is evidence that sufferers from acne have an inability to digest saturated fats, so it is important to eliminate red meat, full fat dairy, fried foods, and hydrogenated vegetable oils from your diet. At the same time it is important to re-introduce certain essential fatty acids (helpful fats) back into your diet as these help with hormonal balance. Nuts, seeds, oily fish, wheat germ, wholegrain cereals are all good sources of these essential fatty acids.

Alternatively, Evening Primrose Oil, and the more potent Starflower Oil, are excellent for treating pre-menstrual syndrome and they do so by altering the hormonal balance and production of prostaglandins. For the same reasons they are very helpful for acne sufferers.

In addition, eat a whole-food diet, cut down on sugar and refined foods such as white bread and white rice, and increase your intake of raw fruits and vegetables to at least 5 portions a day.

Vitamin A is the star vitamin in treating skin conditions - it has all sorts of actions - including healing the mucous membranes of the skin - so increase your intake of this vitamin by eating dark green leafy vegetables, and yellow and orange fruits and vegetables.

Calcium has also been shown to help acne sufferers, but as dairy is contra-indicated, replace it with other Calcium-rich foods such as tofu, green leafy vegetables and fish.

Finally increase your intake of Zinc, which helps the body to absorb Vitamin A and boosts the immune system. Zinc-rich foods include peanuts, wheat germ, pecans, shellfish, and turkey.

It is very important to avoid tea, coffee, alcohol and sugar - as these all upset hormonal balance and blood sugar levels, and increase the potential for acne breakouts.

A food form multi-vitamin and mineral formula, an essential fatty acid formula, plus a daily antioxidant containing the A,C,E vitamins, Selenium and Zinc are recommended as supplements.

this site also recommends Calendula for the skin- topically

Hi there
I don't know if your problem has been solved, but my youngest started to get some serious acne under her bangs. A delightful person on SI had sent me some wonderful herbal soap, and just by chance my daugther started using it on her face, and it cleared the acne up completely. It is gone. Now both my daughters and my son are using the soap "just in case". You can order it on the net- and I order the 4.5 oz bars, and for my first order I got 10, to keep the shipping down, and because we have a lot of bathrooms, and 3 kids who wash a lot.

If you would like to sample a bar PM me- I would be happy to send you one. This soap has lavender buds in it, so it is an exfoliating bar, but the lavender oils are also antibacterial and antiseptic.

I get the soap from
purebotanicals.com

and it is the Lavender Buds bar

again- pm me if you want one.
