Taxes pull money out of productive use in the economy. High taxes are always a bad thing, but they are worst during a strong economic downturn when they pull the economy down even further. The great degree of socialism (90% tax rates, government regulating prices etc.) we had in the 1930s is why there was no recovery for so long, and it didn't just hurt wealthy people, when you put devastating blows against the economy likes these taxes and regulations it hurts the working class as well.
