That device is a form of biofeedback, which has been used for years to treat things such as anxiety. Biofeedback lets you monitor certain biological functions that that change when you are stressed. An easy example is pulse rate. The patient is hooked up to a monitor that measures and displays his pulse rate. When he is anxious, his pulse rate goes up. The patient then works on doing things mentally to calm him down, and he can see the results. When he does the right thing, his sees his pulse slow down. If he does it over and over, he can learn the technique of calming his anxiety without the biofeedback machine.

I have a friend who uses a lot of biofeedback techniques to treat patients with anxiety, and he obtains good results.
