Most of the frenzies the Right Wing of the Republican party has been whipping itself into just bemuse me -- immigration reform, gay marriage, abortion, Intelligent Design. I think these are what they call the "culture wars" and they've already lost.

American Enterprise Institute just came out with a position paper that predicts anywhere between 100 million and 250 million legal immigrants under the proposed Republican immigration reform, and that's not going down very well.

Which supports my point, immigration reform isn't about safety and it's not about law, it's about "preserving" Anglo "culture" (read: percentage of population.)

That's what the whole Red State-Blue State thing is, anyway. Urban culture vs. rural culture.

JMHO. I'm suburban and purple.

When you ask "which direction do I want the country to go" I want smaller government, lower taxes, fewer government regulations. I want subsidiarity.

And I'd like to see some honest dialogue about whether or not we really need the Pax Americana (I think we do) and what we should do about it. Thomas PM Barnett is the guy I'd like to see President.

Failing him, maybe Rudy Giuliani. Or McCain but he's shooting himself in the foot again.

A more effective, more transparent, and more conservative Bush. McCain, ore Warner.

I'd probably have to choose door number 1.

If McCain was not a supporter of campaign finance reform I might choose number 2.

If there was a more libertarian candidate that had a realistic chance I would also consider him or her. I only don't go as far as saying I would vote for him or her because "more libertarian" is rather vague, it doesn't detail the actual policy ideas, skills, and character of the candidate.

Someone like Warner could possibly get my vote. I could see myself voting for him over "a less effective, less transparent, less conservative Bush." <g>, or another form of sufficiently undesirable Republican candidate. I'd also probably pick him over any of the people likely to be the Democrats candidate (but it might be a little early to guess who might be the candidate). I'd have to look in to what he says about national issues a little bit more. We'd get some idea if he actually starts an active campaign for president.
