I'm not even that interested in compassion- I would just like to have us be more certain of what would work, and what would make things worse. At this point I have no confidence that anyone knows what will work. Throwing a bunch of money at the problem before we have any solid ideas just doesn't make sense to me. I feel like suddenly everyone decided to jump on this issue, and it's another one of those "Let's DO something, anything" type parties. I'd like to know what economists think about this, because I'm not sure how the measures will affect the US economy- which is what I care about. I'm not clear on whether a wall will work- or whether it will just divert aliens to entry points elsewhere- and how sad to spend all that money on a big white elephant. I'm not clear on whether we get our money's worth deporting aliens and building detention centers. I'd like to know, in terms of money, what the reward is for us going after this. I'd like our borders to be secure, but I'm not sure this is the way to do it. I'd like to know what the best security strategists think. I wonder if this is what they would think was the best use of our resources.

I don't know the answer to any of this, so I'm very uncomfortable that we may get stuck with a massive and costly enterprise that may not work, or (even worse) may work to our detriment.
